WESTERN RESEARCH ALLIANCE
Third T-BED Luncheon
Dr. Everett E. Bloom
Maximizing the Impact of a National Laboratory
December 19, 2003
The Western Research Alliance, Alumni Association of the
South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and Black Hills State University
hosted Dr. Everett
E. Bloom to present at the third luncheon of the T-BED (Technology Based
economic Development) series of invited speakers on December 19. His
topic was timely given our state's interest in securing a national laboratory
at Homestake. He provided insight as to what a national lab would mean
to our region in sociological and financial terms and as to how we address
those opportunities.
Dr. Bloom presently serves as Director of the Metals and
Ceramics Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Division has
cooperative programs
with the United States industry, academia, and many foreign research
laboratories. Everett has represented the Department of Energy on numerous
national and
international committees and working groups established for the purpose
of planning program strategies.
On Saturday, December 20, Dr. Bloom was honored at the SDSM&T Fall
Commencement with one of five Distinguished Alumni Awards. Hailing from
Doland, SD, Dr. Bloom earned a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering
from the SDSM&T in 1963, and a M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University
of Tennessee in 1964 and 1970, respectively.
